The Weather Channel Signs Deal in Midtown

By Michael Ewing | Commercial Observer

The Weather Channel will be moving its New York office westward, The Commercial Observer has learned.

Previously located on the east side at 205 East 42nd Street, the Weather Channel will be moving to Silverstein Properties-owned 1177 Avenue of the Americas. Its new office, set to span the next 10 years, will take a 33,626-square-foot sixth floor in the million-square-foot building.

Asking rents for the lease were not disclosed, though the building generally fetches rents in the $70s per square foot range.

Executive vice president Roger Silverstein of Silverstein Properties and his colleague Joseph Artusa joined a leasing team from Jones Lang LaSalle consisting of Paul Glickman, Cynthia Wasserberger and Benjamin Bass in representing the landlord. Cresa brokers Ed Wartels and Marcus Rayner represented the Weather Channel in the transaction.

"We are delighted to welcome The Weather Channel to our roster of tenants at the 1177 Avenue of the Americas," said Mr. Silverstein, executive vice president, in a prepared statement.

Leasing activities efforts over the past year have attracted Practising Law Institute and Drinker Biddle & Reath to the building, taking 68,000 square feet and 15,375 square feet, respectively.

The building boasts approximately 250,000 square feet in three contiguous blocks available for leasing, constituting roughly a fourth of the building.

"Last year, our company worked with The Weather Channel on a successful program called ‘Iron Man' about iron workers," added Mr. Silverstein. The show followed Local Ironworkers Union 40 and 361 as they worked on numerous projects, including Silverstein's 4 World Trade Center.

"We look forward to making their transition into our building as smooth as possible," he added.
